42% skip engg counselling on Day 1
More than 42%of candidates failed to turn up for the inaugural day of the general counselling for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) at Anna University on Monday .
As many as 2,884 students were called in for the first phase, scheduled to go on till July 21.
The first 10 students on the list received admit cards from higher education minister K P Anbazhagan and five of them chose electronics and communication engineering (ECE) at College of Engineering, Guindy . Mechanical engineering came second, with three of the top 10 students choosing it.
Inspired by her engineerfather, Aburva Darshini A, the first rank holder, aspires to “invent a technology that would change people’s lives some day .“ She has settled for ECE at the College of Engineering, Guindy .
While nine of the toppers chose university departments of Anna University as their `preferred choice,’ a few who are in contention for NIT seats candidly admitted that there would give the former a miss. “NIT allocation will happen on June 30. If I get into Suratkal or Trichy , I will give up Anna University ,“ said Bharathan N, who was the second rank holder. Fourth rank holder Sivaram also said the same.
Amid the scramble for medical seats, a young lad gave up a medical seat at ESI Hospital in Coimbatore, and chose to do electronics and communication engineering in PSG College of Techology , Coimbatore.
“It was my passion to get into a core engineering branch. My parents are a wee bit disappointed, but I can’t help it,“ said Muraliprasad P from Coimbatore.
Meanwhile, V Vignesh, the second rank holder, gladly let go of his engineering seat and secured a seat at Madras Medical College.
