In a bid to improve field-level monitoring, the Telangana forest department on Monday reduced the area for monitoring for forest beat officers from 19 sq km per person to 9 sq km, forests minister Jogu Ramnna told reporters here.
He also said that the government would take steps to fill a little more than 2,000 vacancies in the department. Incidentally, a bulk of these vacancies exist at the crucial field level, including 552 forest beat officers and a whopping 1,305 assistant forest beat officers. The other field-level staff vacancies to be filled up include those of range officers (67) and section officers (90) and 57 other posts.
Ramanna said after district reorganization, the forest department too recast its structure at the district level. The post of divisional forest officer has been done away with and instead, each district will now have a district forest officer. This official will henceforth be incharge of all forest related activity .However, with regard to wildlife sanctuaries, the head of the sanctuary will be inchrage of the geographical limits of the preserve even if it extends to more than one district, the minister said.
