Anti-polio drive: 65,289 children vaccinated on day one
In the wake of the detection of a wild polio virus strain in the city recently, the health department vaccinated 65,289 children on the first day of the mass polio eradication drive undertaken at 825 centres in 11 clusters in Hyderabad and 12 primary health centres (PHCs) in Ranga Reddy district on Monday .
The anti-polio drive that will go on till June 25 is set to reach out to an estimated 2.5 lakh children aged between 6 weeks and 3 years. Over 3,000 health workers including 850 vaccinators, auxiliary nursing midwife (ANMs) and accredited social health activists (ASHAs) have been engaged in the effort to administer inactivated polio vaccines (IPV).
The World Health Organisation (WHO) protocol mandates that such polio eradication drives be taken up whenever wild strains of polio surface in any area.
“We request parents to turn up at nearest polio booths in the area with their kids to get them vaccinated.The special drive will continue till 25 June,“ advised Dr G Srinivasa Rao, chief programme officer, National Health mission, Telangana, adding that polio immunisation centres set up would keep changing
