Chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is all set to appoint K Pradeep Chandra, an IAS officer from 1982 batch, as next chief secretary of the state.

Though Chandra is slated to retire on December 31, 2016, the chief minister has decided to seek an extension of term for the officer. He will succeed chief secretary Rajiv Sharma whose extended term is coming to end by November 30.

Highly-placed sources in the government said Chandra was selected keeping in mind his efforts to draft the new industrial policy and TS I-Pass, a policy that helped attract large investments to the state.

“KCR also wanted to make up for not keeping his poll promise of appointing a Dalit chief minister and decided to give the top post of chi ef secretary to Pradeep Chandra, who is known for his integrity and sincerity ,“ said a close aide of CM Chandrasekhar Rao.

“It has been decided to seek an extension of service from the Centre to give him a reasonable term,“ he added.

Earlier, the state government examined the candidature of other senior officers, including S P Singh, S K Joshi, BP Acharya and Binoy Kumar. He finally zeroed in on Chandra to send out a message that the government intended to respect seniority . KCR also told his cabinet colleagues that since other officers can be elevated at a later date, making Chandra the next CS will give better mileage to the TRS government among SC and ST communities.

Chandra was born in a family of IAS officers, with his father and sister K Ratnaprabha both being IAS officers from Karnataka cadre.
