GHMC to remove illegal hoardings in city
The city’s skyline will soon have a much cleaner look if the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has its way and if it manages to rein in advertising agencies indulging in unruly activities.
On Saturday , the GHMC issued a fiat to all advertising agencies to immediately remove illegal hoardings in the city . It also ordered all advertising agencies to remove flexis from all hoardings. The order, according to GHMC commissioner, B Janardhan Reddy , will be in force till the end of the monsoon this year.
These decisions were among others taken at an emergency meeting called by GHMC on Saturday with representatives of advertising agencies in the city in which Janardhan Reddy and mayor Bonthu Rammohan discussed the safety of advertising hoardings in the city . The meeting was held following the collapse of a large unipole near Jubilee Hills Checkpost on Friday .
The agencies were given one week time to comply with the instructions, Rammohan said. They were told to identify structurally weak hoardings or unipoles that could cause damage either to people or property .
The mayor also directed the zonal commissioners to identify vulnerable hoardings in their respective areas and remove them. The zonal commissioners have been told to initiate action against the agencies that erected illegal hoardings. It was also decided to constitute a pa nel of engineers with representatives from IIT, JNTUH and Osmania University to check the structural stability of all hoardings and unipoles in the city . The exercise will be completed by June before the onset of the monsoon.
As per official records, the city has 2,864 hoardings and 350 unipoles, the mayor said. Another 1,500 hoardings were erected without permission from the authorities. The advertising wing of the GHMC would prepare an inventory of all the hoardings and submit a report to the commissioner.
