The delay in the execution of two vital road projects has marred the all-weather connectiv1ity to Sonamarg and Ladakh region in Kashmir.

Government of India (GoI) had approved and sanctioned the construction of two vital tunnels on strategic Srinagar-Leh national highway at Shitkari Sonamarg and Zojila for all weather road connectivity

The strategic 434 Km long Srinagar-Leh highway is the only lifeline for Ladakh and its socio-economic development. However in first phase, the government had approved the construction of a tunnel at Shitkari near health resort Sonamarg to make it all weather destination.

The Sonamarg road remains closed for about five months during winters as the area from Gagengar up to Sonamarg along highway experience heavy snowfall.
