PIL seeks cancellation of local body elections
A PIL filed in Gujarat high court on Wednesday has demanded cancellation of upcoming local body elections on the ground that the State Election Commission (SEC) is keeping voters in the dark.
The PIL has been filed by a city-based NGO, Gujarat Nagarik Sangathan, which has objected to the SEC not providing online the affidavits filed by candidates -something that had been ordered by the Supreme Court.
The PIL has termed this as a violation of the SC order. The SC had issued this order on the demand of Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) in 2002. The SEC is yet to upload affidavits of candidates who had contested civic body elections in 2005 and 2010.
Sources said the petitioner NGO has also sought cancellation of the civic elections on the ground that the SEC has decided not to supply voter slips which contain information about voting booths.where they (the voters) are supposed to exercise their franchise
