A Haryana Khap panchayat on Friday ordered five shoe slaps as punishment to a 23-year-old man, who had molested a seven-year-old girl on Thursday.
The incident took place on Thursday evening in Diwana village of Fatehabad district when the victim had gone to buy candies from accused Sanjay Kumar’s shop with her four-year-old cousin.
The victim told her family members that the accused asked the two children to come inside after which he locked the door. He then molested the minor, who resisted and cried for help before returning home. The minor’s parents immediately contacted local panchayat office bearers, who held a meeting on Friday morning inside a veterinary hospital.
As the father of the accused was not in the district, the Khap asked Kumar’s uncle to slap his head with a shoe five times. Moreover, the Khap also ordered the accused to not attend any public gathering and avoid the lanes in the village. The Khap also banned him from sitting at the shop for one year.
Sources said the family of the accused was not ready to accept the order at first, but had no other option when the victim’s family in Chandigarh threatened police action.
The victim’s father said he did not want to challenge the Khap’s jurisdiction. “I understand that the punishment given to the accused is mild as the crime committed by him is heinous but one has to honour the panchayat order. I don’t want to initiate any other step now,” he said.
Meanwhile, the police on Saturday visited the village and spoke to the panchayat members apart from the family members of the accused and the victim. They were also summoned to the police station to settle the case.
Police officials were not available for comment on Friday’s incident.
The accused’s uncle was asked to mete out the punishment Alamgeer during a panchayat meeting in Haryana’s Fatehabad district.
