An 11-year-old girl, Muthulaxmi Swami, from a Belapur slum pocket named Ramabai Nagar, has claimed a gold medal in her debut appearance at state-level, inter-school Taekwondo competition held at Alibaug recently . Swami, a class VI student of civic school number 4 in CBD, is the only player from Navi Mumbai and Raigad district to have won the top medal that propelled her to represent Maharashtra at the national championship to be held at Hyderabad from October 4 to 6.
She took to Taekwondo eight months ago at the NMMC-sponsored sports training scheme.Her family’s financial condition was not a deterrent as NMMC funded her training, uniform, grading exams. “She has made us proud,“ said NMMC sports officer, Revappa Gurav .
