A battling fifty from AB de Villiers was overshadowed by R Ashwin’s 13th five-wicket haul in Tests as South Africa conceded a slender 17-run lead in reply to India’s 201 in Mohali. As was expected, spin dominated proceedings on the second day at Mohali with South Africa struggling to get any momentum on a crumbling pitch.
They did manage to give a good account of themselves in the first hour of the second day. However, it turned around rapidly as R Ashwin and Jadeja triggered a collapse to put things on an even keel.
AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla were the only ones who seemed to bat with any sort of comfort on the pitch, and even that was only in comparison to the struggles of the others. De Villiers himself had a very scratchy start when he walked out to bat, but gradually learned how to score runs on the track, getting to his 37th Test fifty.
