Opposition LDF and ruling UDF are fighting a pitched battle in the local government elections in Kerala, the two alliances winning almost equal number of wards in grama panchayats and fighting for upper hand in municipalities and corporations.
While the LDF was leading in 4195 wards, the UDF tally was 3498 seats. LDF is in the lead in the Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Kozhikode Corporations while the UDF is in the lead in Kochi, Thrissur, and Kannur Corporations.
The BJP has been able to make some impressive gains, opening its account in the Kollam Corporation and winning four divisions in the Thalassery municipality. Overall, the BJP is in the lead in 538 wards.
