BJP released it first list of 52 candidates fo the West Bengal assembl elections late on Wednesda evening.
Netaji Subhas Chandr Bose’s grand-nephew, Chand ra Kumar Bose, has been pick ed to contest against CM Ma mata Banerjee at Bhowanipore, where Om Prakash Mishra is likely to be the Congress nominee. In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, BJP candidate Tathagata Roy had polled 47,465 votes from the Bhowanipore assembly seg ment, 185 more than Trinamool’s Subrata Bakshi.
State BJP president Dilip Ghosh will contest from Kharagpur Sadar, but women’s cell chief Roopa Ganguly’s name doesn’t figure on the first list.
Of the five women on the list, actor Locket Chatterjee has been fielded from Mayureswar in Birbhum. Another actor, Joy Banerjee, will contest from Suri. Banerjee had unsuccessfully contested the 2014 Lok Sabha polls from Birbhum.
Shamik Bhattacharya, the only BJP MLA in Bengal, has been retained from Basirhat Dakshin and former footballer Sasti Duley fielded from Dhanekhali. Veteran BJP leader Subash Sarkar will contest from Bankura.
Significantly, only one of the 11 constituencies in Kolkata -Bhowanipore -figured on the list. Party sources said there has been a rift in the party ever since Ghosh took over as president from Rahul Sinha and Ghosh’s aides are allegedly against fielding candidates close to Sinha. But Sinha himself is tipped to contest from Jorasanko. In the 2014 LS polls, Sinha had bagged 45,075 votes in the Jorasanko assembly segment against 28,593 by Trinamool’s Sudip Bandyopadhyay .
