The police arrested a rightwing activist, one of the accused behind the murder of Rationalist Govind Pansare.
An accused behind the murder of CPI leader Govind Pansare have been detained by police at Sangli of Maharashtra on Wednesday.
According to the sources Sameer Vishnu Gaikwad had been detained by Maharashtra police by a joint operation by police officials of Sangli and Kolhapur. Sameer who was an active member of Sanathan Sanstha has been nabbed on the basis of the details of his mobile phone which were tracked by the police.
Sameer was produced in a court after which he had been remanded for seven days in police custody. He was wanted in several cases in Sangli didtrict. According to the sources he ran a mobile phone repair shop in Sangli few years ago.
Govind Pansare had been shot dead by unknown assailants who came on bike when he was out on a morning walk along with his wife on February 16 this year. Pansare was declared dead after four days of treatment in a hospital.
Pansare’s murder attained utmost significance in the wake of murder of another rationalist Narendra Dabholkar in Pune which was occurred days before Pansare was shot dead in the similar way.
Narendra Dhabolkar who was a well-known anti-superstition activist and professor was shot dead in Pune in 2013.
In the same way scholar and rationalist MM Kalburgi was also shot dead in a similar way at his home by unknown assailants.
Recently another rationalist KS Bhagwan has received a threat letter days after Kalburgi was killed. The letter read ”three people we have finished, next is your turn; no amount of police protection will help. Your time is over, count the days.”
The families of the three rationalists met Karnataka Chief Minister M Siddaramaiah to request him to investigate the murder case of the rationalists.
