Mayorol Poll In Bengaluru Today: The voting for the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Bengaluru has began today.
The poll for the election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor to the Bengaluru civic body has began today which has come amidst after the Congress and JDS to forge an alliance against the BJP’s plans to detain control of the BBMP council even after winning 100 out of 198 seats in the BBMP polls held on August 22, 2015.
Congress won 76, JDS 14 and others eight. BBMP Council which consist 260 members includes 62 other members from Bengaluru with voting rights besides corporators. They include Members of Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, MLAs and MLCs.
In order to gain control over BBMP one should posses 131 seats, the Congress-JDS alliance made it to 132 which makes for them to sail through the situation.
Five new corporators M Pramila, R Prathima, Deepa Nagesh, Umavati Padmaraj and Kumari Palanikant who were not ready to accept the probable defeat filed a plea in Karnataka High Court challenging the section 7 and 10 saying that only those who contest in the elections must be allowed to vote and not MLA’s, MLC’s and MP’s.
BJP had filed a petition in Karnataka High Court against the Congress JDS alliance saying that Section 10 of Karnataka Municipal Act 1976, allowed both non-corporators and corporators to participate in the Mayoral poll.
The mayoral election is the outcome of the petition after which the court ordered the result on September 11 will be in regard to the outcome of the petition.
The court directed only members who have the right to vote in Mayorol polls have to be allowed to participate in elections and no outside or member of public except media media persons have the right to cover the proceedings.
