The 7.5km JVLR-KoparkhairaneGhansoli bridge will be the only inter-city link with a long cycle track and a walkway which will be accessible from both ends.
MMRDA engineer-inchief P D Mamdapure told on Friday that N P Bridging (Belgium), consultants for the infra-project, may submit the final report on the 3×3 lane bridge that will link the eastern suburbs by mid-September.
Space was an issue for the design, and sources said the traffic police wanted 4×4 lanes, but it would have led to the demolition of many buildings. It will be the third bridge over the creek; the others being the Vashi creek bridge to Chembur and beyond, and the Airoli bridge to Mulund.
The Navi Mumbai-end provides for a seamless corridor for travelling to Thane, Dombivli, Kalyan and Ambernath, besides throwing open a direct corridor with the new second international airport. It will mean easier access for residents of Ghatkopar, Powai, Vikhroli, Kanjur Marg and Bhandup. The connector will lead to a real estate boom as travel time will reduce by about an hour.
The bridge will have ramp connectivity on the Eastern Expressway with a city connect on the ThaneBelapur road.
