In a first, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is planning to develop 15 sports centres with coaching facilities at their stadiums. Council secretary Chanchal Yadav said, they will rope in foreign coaches to train students at a subsidised rate.
“Delhi lacks such centres and this is an attempt to provide proper infrastructure so that people take to sports as their profession,“ said Yadav.
Basketball, lawn tennis, football, cricket, badminton, table tennis, hockey and volleyball will be encouraged here. “There are many centres in the city but are unaffordable. A lot of talent gets suppressed due to financial difficulties. NDMC plans to bring out such talent,“ she said.
The council has roped in private sports academies to train registered students, Yadav said. “We also plan to keep an eye on students who perform well . We will train them for Olympic and other world tournaments,“ she added. Last year, NDMC had came up with a proposal to develop “World Class“ sports centre in a multi-purpose gymna sium at Laxmibai Nagar but now, it has decided to inaugurate such facilities across its area of jurisdiction.
