It’s going to be a highway bonanza for poll bound Uttar Pradesh. Highways minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said he will launch or inaugurate at least one project every week till the election dates are announced.

The minister also announced NHAI plan to build a new 74 km expressway connecting Kanpur with Lucknow costing around Rs 5,000 crore. Ministry officials said that at least 20 projects are ready for roll out or for completion, which will be enough to hold official functions every week across the state.

Already a dozen project has been rolled out in the past two months. “Nothing is more visible than road development.Highways and railways are the two major sectors, which Centre executes and gets the credit for it. No government wants to miss that opportunity,“ said a source.

According to officials construction works worth Rs 1.3 lakh crore in UP is likely to start in the next couple of months. Gadkari along with home Minister Rajnath Singh will lay the foundation stone for crucial Lucknow Ring Road project costing around Rs 5,700 crore on Friday to decongest the state capital. It will be the second biggest Ring Road project after Delhi. Gadkari claimed his ministry and NHAI target to complete projects worth Rs 2 lakh crore in five years. Nearly 100 highway projects have been planned for UP. The biggest state has 31 ongoing national highway projects costing around Rs 19,400 crore.

The minister also announced a host of other major highway projects in north India including the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, Delhi-Jaipur Expressway and Ajmer-Jalandhar Expressway costing over Rs 1.5 lakh crore.

“Funding is not an issue for us. What we need is quick execution of works.Highway development will push economic activities. I have been pursuing the UP government to sign um brella agreement with my ministry for smoother execution of works. I will pursue it further,“ Gadkari said.
