Govt notifies user, waste management fee for plastic
The Centre on Friday notified stringent plastic waste management rules to regulate use of the hazardous material and handle the generated waste. It also banned use of plastic bags of less than 50 microns in thickness as against existing norms of 40.
Be it manufacturers, shopkeepers, street vendors or waste generators -including individuals, institutions and organizers of big events like political rallies, religious gatherings or marriages -the government enlisted certain `dos’ and `don’ts’ and introduced a concept of “user fee“ and “waste management fee“ at different levels.
Shopkeepers and street vendors, willing to provide plastic bags to customers, will now have to register with local bodies on payment of a `plastic waste management fee’ of minimum Rs 48,000 per annum (Rs 4000 per month). Under the new rules, which are to be imple mented within six months, the violators will have to pay penalty for not disposing of plastic waste in the prescribed manner. The amount of fine will be decided by local civic bodies.
