Technology giants Infosys and Wipro will have to wait for special economic zone status for their projects in the state till the Centre changes its SEZ rule or the Mamata Banerjee government tweaks its policy .
Union commerce secretary Rita A Teoatia made it clear on Friday that the Centre will not notify a new SEZ unless it is recommended by the state government.
“Our clear view is that the SEZ should be set up in concurrence with the state government. After all, land is a state subject. It is a territory of the state. So, it has to take a call,“ Teoatia said.
After a lying low for four years, both Wipro and Infosys recently applied for SEZ status for their respective mega projects on 50 acres each in New Town-Rajarhat.The Wipro application was tabled in June at the Centre’s Board of Approvals (BoA) meeting chaired by the Union commerce secretary , but an in-principle approval is still pending because it does not have the recommendations of the Bengal government. Subsequently , the Infosys application was heard in the BoA meeting on August 12, and is pending for the same reason.
The commerce secretary , however, indicated that a change in the Centre’s SEZ policy is on the anvil. The Union commerce se cretary said, “The SEZ Act, Foreign Trade Act and the schemes of DGFT (Director General Foreign Trade) have to be realigned and compatible with GST.“
