Rajasthan ranks first in having the highest number of science, English and social science periods in primary classes in a week in the country . While the desert state ranked second in terms of having highest number of maths periods, says a decade long National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) study released last week.
Data says that science, maths and social science each have 9 periods in a week while 6 periods for English in Class V . These subjects constitute for about 33 out of 42 periods in a week. It indicates that state has given much importance to these main subjects. While UP, Gujarat and MP have 4, 7 and 6 periods in science, maths and social science, respectively .
“It best explains the success rate of state board students in national level exams like National Talent Science Examination, Kishore Vigyanik Puruskar Yojna and four Olympiads which take place in upper primary , secondary and senior secondary classes. It is also interesting to note that students at this stage rarely get qualified coaching. So the credit of this success has to be given to the dedicated classes in schools,“ said K B Kothari, managing director of Pratham.Though RBSE students have second largest share in IITs, it is significant to note that most of the successful IIT students get an access to coaching facilities.
