Keeping the ensuing panchayat elections in mind, the state government goes all out to gain favour of the rural voters by doling out freebies and launching populist schemes. With the rural polls are six months away, chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday launched another new scheme construction workers pension scheme—that ensures financial assistance of Rs 300 per month to all registered construction workers after attaining the age of 60 years and Rs 500 for construction workers of more than 80 years.
The pension scheme is, however, the third populist schemes of the BJD government in less than one month. Recently, the state government launched the Mahaprayan scheme for taking bodies from hospital to the deceased’s house and Biju Kanya Ratna scheme that aims to improve child sex ratio. Under the pension scheme, the state government targets to cover around 25 lakh registered construction workers in a phased manner even as only 15 lakh construction workers have so far registered with the Odisha Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, said an official statement from the chief minister’s office.
