IIT-B zone tops in JEE (A) qualifiers
One in four students who qualified in JEE (Advanced) for admission to the premier IITs is from the IIT-Bombay zone. Like last year, the IIT-Bombay zone has the highest number of candidates (8,810, of whom 2,506 are from Maharashtra) qualifying in one of the most competitive exams for undergraduate admissions in the country , followed by IIT-Madras (6,702) and IIT-Delhi with 5,941candidates.
Aman Bansal from Jaipur (which falls in the IIT-B zone) topped the country with a sco re of 324, while Preey Shah from Andheri emerged as the state topper with an all India rank (AIR) of 16. The top three toppers were all coached at the same Kota institute. A round 24.8% or 36,566 of the 1.47 lakh students who appeared for the JEE (Advanced) on May 22 have qualified this year to participate in the admission process. Last year, 26,456 or 22% of the 1.17 lakh students had made it to the general merit list.
IIT-Bombay zone has the highest number of candidates -37 -in the top 100 list, followed by IIT-Madras zone with 30 and IIT-Delhi with 18 candidates. Kanpur, Kharagpur and Guwahati zones have four, three and one candidate, respectively . The rankers in the top 100 list from IIT-Roorkee dropped drastically from last year’s 17 to 7 this year.Among the top 10 ranks, however, IIT-Madras zone sco red over others with five candidates. No candidates from IIT-Kanpur, Kharagpur, Guwahati zones made it to the top 10 ranks.
The first (Bansal) and the third topper Kunal Goyal both hail from Jaipur, which also falls under the IIT-Bombay zone. The top three rankers are from the same coaching institute in Kota. The girl topper in the country , Riya Shah (AIR 133), is from Madhya Pradesh. Bhavesh Dhingra from Harayana stood second.
Last year, all the top three rankers and the girl topper were from Madhya Pradesh.A professor from the JEE (Advanced) office said that most of the students migrate to other cities for coaching and that could be one reason for many coming from one place.
