The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) on Wednesday recommended the state government to pay compensation of Rs 50,000 to a woman for alleged negligence towards her by a state-owned hospital in Mayurbhanj district. The woman, Rina Singh was forced to deliver a girl outside the hospital in March this year as the hospital was locked at midnight.
On March 28, the pregnant Rina Singh was rushed to the community health centre at Barasahi around 12 midnight. “Though she was in labour, the nurse and other staffers did not open the hospital gate. The nurse cited the absence of doctor in the hospital and insisted the patient to go to another hospital. Singh was forced to deliver a baby outside the hospital,” OHRCs acting chairperson B K Mishra said in his order. The rights panel had then sought a report from the chief district medical officer in Mayurbhanj.
