The longstanding demand for a passenger halt in the industrial estate of Berhampur town has gained momentum with local residents threatening to stage a rail-roko agitation.

Silpanachal Passenger Halt Sangram Samiti, the outfit leading the agitation for a second passenger halt in the Silk City, has submitted a memorandum in this regard to the divisional manager (Khurda Road) through the station manager here.

“We have been demanding a passenger halt for the industrial estate of the Silk City for the last few years. A technical team from the Khurda Road division of East Cost Railway had also visited the site on May 30 last year to inspect the feasibility of the project. If the authorities do not take any step before October 4, we will stage a rail-roko at the industrial estate,” said the convener of the outfit, Uma Charan Nayak.

Irrespective of their party affiliations, several corporators and ex-corporators of the Berhampur Municipal Corporation and some trade unions extended their support to the cause.
