National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the state government not to carry out any activities like human settlements, construction of roads, railway line, electric lines, canal and mining in highly eco-sensitive areas like government proposed elephant corridor until it gives a further order. The tribunal passed the order on October 20 while hearing a case filed by the Wildlife Society of Orissa (WSO) regarding alleged delay in issuing notification for elephant corridor by the state government.
WSO secretary Dr Biswajit Mohanty said the state government had identified 14 elephant corridors stretching over a total area of 870.61 square km which needed to be protected under law by notifying them under section 3 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. The corridors have been mapped and described by the Chief Wildlife Warden and the proposals are lying with the state government since four years, he added.
