Shiv Sena wrote a letter PM Modi demanding Bharat Ratna award to freedom fighter Veer Savarkar.
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi for conferring Bharat Ratna to freedom fighter Damodar Vinayak Savarkar.
The leader has written a letter to Modi saying that Savarkar was a staunch supporter of Hindu nation and said that the previous govt’s ignored the freedom fighter.
He said that it is the responsibility and high time for the NDA govt to confer the freedom fighter with the highest civilian award in order to rectify the mistakes of the earlier Govt’s.
Raut said the Savarkar is a great freedom fighter who is apt for the award saying that the freedom fighter was held in cellular jail of Andaman and was sentenced to life term.
Savarkar was an Indian pro-independence activist born on 28 May 1883 who was also a politician as well as a poet, writer and playwright. He rigorously worked for dismantling the system of caste in Hindu culture, and reconversion of the converted Hindus back to Hindu religion and also coined the term Hindutva (Hinduness) to create a collective Hindu identity as an imagined nation.
”The Indian War of Independence” a book was also published by Savarkar which is about the Indian rebellion of 1857 that was banned by British authorities. He was arrested in 1910 for his connections with the revolutionary group India House.
Savarkar was sentenced to two life terms of imprisonment and was moved to the Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, but released in 1921.
On 1 February 1966 Savarkar renounced medicines, food and water which he termed as atmaarpan . He died on 26 February 1966 at the age of 83
