Social Activist Medha Patkar Arrested In Allahabad: Social activist Medha Patkar has been detained by Allahabad police in fear of protest by her and her followers against Karchhana power plant.
The environmental activist Medha Patkar was arrested along with 10 of her associates on Saturday by Allahabad police.
Earlier the farmers has held a protest and clashed with the police when the district administration tried to vacate land for the upcoming Karchhana mega power plant.
According to the sources Medha Patkar was heading towards Kachri village in Allahabad’s Karchhana area along with her supporters was stopped by the police officials as a model code of conduct and fear of protest by her.
Patkar was going to attend an event in the village on death anniversary of a social activist Banwari Lal Sharma and also she was scheduled to meet families of some people who were arrested for opposing the land acquisition in the area.
SSP K S Emmanuel said: “We had detained the social activist in apprehension of trouble at Kachri as she wanted to go to that village. We detained her at the police lines as a preventive measure.”
After her arrest Medha Patkar insisted the officials to arrange a meeting with district magistrate who arrived there in the afternoon. She assured the district magistrate that the farmers will not resort to the blockage of railway tracks. The magistrate asked her in return for some time to look into the records to identify if any innocents were named in the FIR.
The district magistrate also urged Patkar to cancel her visit to the village in the wake of prohibitory orders in the village.
An FIR had been registered by the police on farmer leader Raj Bahadur Patel and 42 others under the charges of blockade of road, arson, assault on police and blocking the rail track.
