Sri Narasimha Jayanthi is celebrated on May 20, 2016 (Friday). Lord Narasimha is the avatara of Lord Vishnu with lion face and human body.
Special Homa, Abhisheka, Archana, Aarti will be held in temples. Devotees will chant and sing praises of Lord Vishnu.
Once an Asura named Hiranyakashipu did penance and got boon from Brahma that a) he cannot be killed any one created by Brahma, b) cannot be killed in day or night, c) cannot be killed in earth or sky, d) cannot be killed by weapon etc
After getting boon, Hiranyakashipu became arrogant and ordered everyone to worship him as God. He harmed Rishis and Devotees of God. But his son Prahalada, influenced by Sage Narada, was a staunch Bhakta of Lord Vishnu.
This irritated Hiranyakashipu and he deployed several methods to kill Prahalada. But Prahaladha was saved by Lord Vishnu every time.
Hiranyakashipu got frustrated and asked Prahalada where Lord Vishnu resides. Prahalada replied that Lord Vishnu is present everywhere including large pillars and smallminute particles.
Hiranyakashipu broke the pillar to see Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu appeared as Narasimha and took him to courtyard, at the sandhya time (meeting time between day and night), placed him in his thigh and killed him with his nails.
