With the Election Commission expected to announce the date of Tamil Nadu assembly election later this week, the state government has been launching many welfare programmes and infrastructure projects.
Poll day is expected to be in mid-April and counting likely to be in May. Once the election date is announced, the model code of conduct will come into force, and the government will not be able to announce any new scheme or inaugurate any completed project. In a communique on Monday , chief electoral officer Rajesh Lakhoni instructed all heads of departments to intimate the CEO’s office details of the last government order issued by them. They also have been asked to take photocopies of the register with the last entry of government order on it and pass it on to the CEO’s office within two hours of announcement of election.
Meanwhile, EC has been holding a series of meetings in New Delhi to gear up for assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, West Bengal and Union Territory of Puducherry . “The date is likely to be announced in a day or two. It will be announced this week itself,“ said a source in the commission. Given the fact that the last election took place in the second week of April in a single phase, the same is expected this time too.
